How Many of Them Can You Find in This Grade 9 Essay?
Question
Using the extract as a starting point, how is the character of Hyde presented and developed?
Thesis
Stevenson portrays Hyde for his Christian readers as an embodiment of evil, through hyperbole. However, sophisticate readers will see through this, and recognise Hyde is almost blameless in his early actions, while everyone else behaves in truly evil ways. Consequently Stevenson blames society for any evil in Hyde, showing that he is created by its Christian oppression of natural desire.
Essay Body
At first, Stevenson signals that Hyde’s sinful activity is probably matched by Enfield who has come from “the end of the world”.
Hyde appears innocent, “a little man” who is only, “stumping” along when a girl collides with him, “running hard”. It is clearly not his fault.
However, Enfield describes him hyperbolically “like some damned Juggernaut.” This juxtaposition is clearly ridiculous compared to Hyde’s smallness. When Enfield restrains him, he “made no resistance”, giving him only a “look”. He is utterly unthreatening. Stevenson even points out “the child was not much the worse” and completely unharmed.
